Does this describe you? You have a smile gap and you'd love to fill it with a truly permanent tooth replacement. Could dental implants be right for you? At Federal Hill Smiles in Baltimore, MD Dr. Denise Markoff places innovative dental implants, offering patients the restored smile and great personal appearance they want and deserve. Learn more about how these artificial teeth work.
The American Dental Association (ADA) reports that in the United States alone, dentists annually place about 5 million dental implants. Composed of a titanium implant screw, metal alloy extension post, and lifelike porcelain crown, the single-tooth implant strengthens the individual's jaw bone, helping them bite and chew effectively while also conferring a natural smile appearance. It's no wonder these dental prosthetics are so popular with both oral health care providers and patients!
How can an artificial tooth do all that? Dr. Markoff inserts implants right into the bone, activating a marvelous process called osseointegration. Through osseointegration, the jaw bone adheres right to the titanium device. Time and the actions of biting and chewing solidify the bond and the strength and density of the jaw. No other tooth replacement option helps the bone and gum tissue in this way.
Are dental implants right for you?
At Federal Hills Smiles in Baltimore, MD, Dr. Markoff qualifies adult and teen patients for dental implants. She uses oral examination, X-rays, and CT scan imaging to determine if the jaw bone is wide enough and dense enough to accept an implant device. Overall health should be good, too, and usually, non-smokers fare better after implant placement than tobacco users do.
If you are missing more than one tooth, Dr. Markoff may recommend:
- Placement of multiple single-tooth implants
- Implant-supported dentures
- Implant-supported bridgework
The implant treatment
If you qualify, Dr. Markoff will perform the entire treatment right at Federal Hill Smiles. After she numbs the site with local anesthetic, she will open the gums, create a small hole in the jaw bone, and literally screw the implant in place before suturing the gums closed.
You'll return home for several weeks to months of healing. Then, the magic of osseointegration occurs. When you return to the office, Dr. Markoff will re-open the site and bond on the extension post and custom-made porcelain crown. This completes the treatment.
Caring for your implant
It's as simple as brushing twice a day with a quality toothpaste and soft toothbrush, flossing daily as your hygienist instructs, and if you grind your teeth, asking the dentist about a bite guard to cushion your implant and other teeth. See Dr. Markoff twice a year as usual for cleanings and check-ups, or call the office with any questions or concerns you may have about your implant.
